POLICY FORUM GUYANA JOINS THE CALL FOR URGENT ACTION TO HALT DEEP-SEA MINING AND PROTECT OUR OCEANS
Policy Forum Guyana, along with regional and international bodies, leads an effort to endorse a moratorium on deep-sea mining, aiming to protect oceans and marine ecosystems from irreversible damage. A joint statement is being prepared by esteemed organizations, urging governments to prioritize ocean health. The International Seabed Authority’s powers and existence are largely unknown, highlighting the need for awareness. Deep-sea mining threatens ecosystems responsible for climate regulation, outweighing short-term gains. The changing demands and potential irreversible consequences call for the preservation of biodiversity. The International Seabed Authority must reject applications until comprehensive regulations are established. Let’s prioritize ocean protection over short-term economic gains on this World Oceans Day.
